Maybe it’s because I’m a Londoner

By Edit | 13 Mar 2019

Why, Sir, you find no man, at all intellectual, who is willing to leave London. No, Sir, when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford.

Samuel Johnson

There’s no doubt about it, London is awesome.  I love it.  As a born and bred Londoner, I still find pleasure simply getting lost and wandering around unfamiliar areas, often discovering hidden gems, always safe in the knowledge that sooner or later I’ll find a tube station and suddenly not be lost anymore.

But in Sam’s time back in 1777, he wouldn’t have had the luxury of a 90 minute train journey to the beautiful and culturally rich and diverse West Country.  In his time his statement was probably fairly true.

Well Sammy boy, not anymore.

Enter Edit.

Hands up, Edit isn’t the first agency bursting with intellectual, creative and curious minds in the South West, but it is the newest, shiniest and closest to Bath Spa train station.  Born out of Response One, Occam and Amaze One, Edit is a brand-new type of media agency.  What makes different is that our basic aim is to simplify the marketing journey.  With CRM, Media, Data Science and Technology now sitting under one roof, our experts collaborate so much more easily and save clients’ time by editing their marketing experience to be more efficient in all areas.  As far as I am aware, we are the first of this type of agency, not just outside of London, but in the whole country.

A new agency needs a new office and we recently moved to our location in Manvers Street   We’ve got everything you’d expect from a London agency.  Posh coffee machines, breakout rooms, poncy meeting room names like Teeny and Tiny, a library and even… wait for it… the Editorium where we hold full company updates and host our weekly Friday happy hour.  Soon, the Editorium will be host to events, industry speakers and more.  This is a fantastic asset for us as we are now one of the largest employers in Bath, with over 200 brilliant minds working here.

My point? Edit feels like a London agency with one big exception.  The commute.  Ah my old London commute…  A minimum of 2 hours a day nestling into a stranger’s body, whilst some idiot flutters their newspaper in my face on the hot and sweaty tube.  I may not be tired of London, but I did quickly tire of that.

A lot of my friends did too and inevitably many of us moved to the ‘burbs in the hope of more house for our money and the occasional glimpse of a blade of grass.  The problem with that is that the commute into London is often longer and inevitably more expensive.

Well, Dear Reader, there is an alternative – and the alternative is the West Country. House prices are cheaper here too!  Both my home life and work life have flourished since I moved here and personally I cannot recommend it enough.

The Theatre Royal’s programme is diverse and exciting.  You may sometimes have to wait for West End productions to come to Bath but when they do you can get great seats for a fraction of the price of the London theatres.  There are a huge amount of award winning restaurants here like degustation restaurant Menu Gordon Jones and vegetarian Acorn, as well as all the chains.  Unless its Saturday, you’re unlikely to need to make a booking.

The canal runs through the city with a cycle path that gives you easy access to nearby beautiful Bathampton and if you go the other way, Bristol is about 16 miles away.  If you’re like me and feel like a walk in the country can only be justified with a stop in a country pub, both the walks and the pubs are achingly close by.  My current favourite is The Longs Arms that serves the best Sunday roast I’ve ever had in a pub, second only to my Mums.

And not to worry, London is only 90 minutes away for when I need my fix of the big smoke.

To work with us, for us, or come visit us in Bath.
